The Future City® Competition lets our 6th, 7th and 8th Graders make dreams a reality as they imagine, design, and build cities of the future! For general information on the National Engineers Week Future City Competition, please visit the National Future City website: http://www.futurecity.org/ and the WNY Future City website: http://www.futurecitywny.org .
This year we have two teams with Mr. Gallagher, Mr. Notaro, and Mr. Weppner as Engineer Mentors and Mrs. Tahk as Teacher Coach, with input from Mr. D’Arienzo, Mrs. Baczkowski, Mrs. Lesandro, Mr. Hart-Nova, Mrs. Ruh, and Mr. Wild.
Choosing and developing the scenarios is the first step for both teams. We start by brainstorming ideas and acquiring background for the essay along with designing our cities of the future with Simcity4 software: balancing zoning and city development, infrastructure, parks, schools, museums, sports facilities, budget constraints, and citizen demands… happily, we always have some talented Simcity4 experts!
This year’s essay topic is “Tomorrow’s Transit: Design a way to move people in and around your city”. Should be an interesting challenge since we’re setting one city on the Moon and the other on a Hawaiian island with a large portion of the city underwater!
The schedule will vary from month to month, maybe even week to week, to work around the demands of school work and sports practices and events. You can find information and helpful links at www.nativitystem.net.
We hope you’ll join us at Mount St Mary’s High School on Saturday, January 25, 2014 to see our completed models and hear our presentations… you’ll be as impressed as the engineer judges always are!
