The 5th grade class has been learning about classifying living things; what are vertebrates and invertebrates? The class built a model backbone using a pipe cleaner, pasta, and soft candy rings. The pipe cleaner represented the spinal cord, the pasta represented the vertebrae, and the soft candy rings represented the discs. The class was able to see how a real backbone enables the upper body to bend and twist. It makes the body flexible while providing support to the head.
